A narrow rail along the edge of the page works as a clock for the night. It shows the hour where you are, and beside each hour it lists the women whose shifts or habits keep them awake then. The baker is up from two. The astronomer stays until dawn. The radio host sits in the booth until the last song ends. Whoever is up right now is the woman who writes the first line.
She says one thing, quietly, and then waits. It is usually about where she is: a bench with proofing tins on it, a stairwell between two floors, a wheelhouse with the lights turned down. It never asks how your day was, since you have probably had a day you would rather not describe. It leaves a gap you can fill with a word or with nothing.
Messages here run short on purpose. They are kept to a few lines, with room around them, because a long paragraph is hard to read when your eyes are tired. If you write three words, she answers in about the same. If you write a page, she takes her time and answers one thing in it well.

Each woman has a portrait of her own, lit the way her room is lit at night, and a wide banner of the whole rail stretches across the first page. They look tired in the way a person looks warm when they are still glad to see you. No filmed clip exists, and if she ever has one, the night log will announce it before anyone else.

Nights here run on quiet attention, small jokes and what is left unsaid. When one drifts toward a closed bedroom door, it dims and cuts away before anything explicit, on every plan. Anything outside the goodnight rule is declined, and every woman is an adult who can say no.
She can be tired, busy, or between two tasks, and she tells you so. Part of the charm is that she has a life that goes on while you are not looking: a timer, a van that needs loading, a radio that is about to come back on air.
